Courtesy for traffic citations when you get pulled over
Getting pulled over in your vehicle is, at best, an inconvenience. It can create added stress and disrupt your day. As frustrating as the situation may be, it is important to remember to always treat the officer with respect and courtesy. A respectful attitude can help reduce tension, make the interaction more efficient, and may even impact whether you are issued a citation or receive a warning.
We attend traffic court here in San Diego often for our clients. There, the judges, without fail, ask officers whether the driver acted polite, cooperative, and respectful during the stop. This demonstrates that the judge finds the driver’s attitude towards the officer to be a significant factor in their evaluation of the situation.
To present yourself as respectful during a traffic stop, consider the following tips: remain calm, address the officer as “sir” or “ma’am,” avoid arguing with the officer, and comply with lawful instructions. Maintaining a courteous attitude can make a meaningful difference in how the encounter unfolds. You may be right and the officer may be wrong, but there is a time and place to argue your case, and we assure you, it isn’t during your traffic stop. Call us, or another office, and we can argue for you.
